All About You JOB SUMMARY : Under general direction, is responsible for analysis and understanding of the critical documents that are associated with clinical research, including: protocols, amendments, consent forms, contracts and budgets to ensure research billing compliance and sound financial management of clinical research; performs initial review of clinical trials submitted to Clinical Trials Office, performs research billing compliance reviews; is responsible for abstraction of medical and research record documentation to ensure timely and accurate coding of all medical and research study services, and has general knowledge of CMS and Third Party Payer billing rules; interfaces with various departments, physicians, clinical research nurses, coordinators, sponsors and local hospital affiliates when appropriate.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES : - In relation to industry sponsored research, reviews medical records to evaluate accuracy of codes for medical billing and to ensure that all services have been captured for timely filing of medical claims to payers. Applies general knowledge of CMS regulations and third-party payer guidelines to apply correct coding practices to medical claims. Responds to clinical trials billing inquiries and ensures timely processing of billing errors and corrections as they relate to claims. Manages the follow-up on unpaid claims.
- Assists with the review of research billing compliance to ensure federal regulations are met for clinical research billing to insurance or research accounts.
- Assists with the development of coverage analyses and internal budgets of investigator-initiated, industry-sponsored, and non-industry sponsored clinical trials.
- Assists with financial audits.
- Assists with the CTMS management and compilation of metric data as it relates to clinical trial activities.
- Attends meetings, performs other duties as assigned.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES : - Knowledge of regulations and guidelines related to clinical research
- Working knowledge of clinical research terminology and multiple medical conditions
- Working knowledge of Medicare/Medical billing/coding processes
- Working knowledge of Medical and Research billing and coding utilizing CPT, ICD-10 and HCPCS
- Knowledge of GE Centricity, EPIC, Clinical Conductor CTMS and other University Electronic Data Systems
- Ability to efficiently operate computer software for Electronic Health Record and Practice Management Systems
- Ability to evaluate system edits for appropriateness of coding and apply appropriate third-party payer rules
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
- Excellent time management, organizational and multitasking skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : - Bachelor's degree; supplemented with two (2) years of related work experience and a required AAPC specialty-specific coding credentials (applicable for appropriate department assignment) or AAPC-CPC or RHIT certification OR one-year medical billing, clinical trial billing or health insurance experience with ability to obtain CPC certification within 12 months. Master's degree preferred. Certified Coding Specialist certification preferred.
