Permian Basin Overview

ConocoPhillips and its heritage companies have operated in the Permian Basin for almost 100 years. Across New Mexico and Texas, the company holds conventional positions in the Northwest Shelf and Central Basin Platform, and an unconventional position in the Delaware Basin. Permian saw significant growth in 2021 with the acquisition of Concho Resources Inc. in January 2021 and the addition of Shell’s Permian acreage in December 2021. At year-end, the company held approximately 1.5 million net acres in the Permian Basin.

Net production for the Permian in 2022 was 461 MBOED.

Description

If you are selected as the Process Safety Engineer, you will ensure oversight and support for the 5 Permian asset areas around process safety fundamental, industry and company codes and guidelines.

Responsibilities may include:

• Coordinate and/or participate in preliminary hazard analysis (PHA) and layers of protection analysis (LOPA) activities for Permian (Delaware and Midland Basins); must be knowledgeable and competent with these processes
• Write and implement effective guidance that supports process safety initiatives
• Monitor and develop key performance indicators (most importantly, leading indicators) to track process safety management (PSM) progress
• Participate and/or lead process safety audits and gap analyses
• Coordinate process safety knowledge sharing and standard methodologies across multiple assets
• Communicate external process safety events and share standard methodologies identified within the company
• Participate in incident investigations
• Participate in company process safety technical networks
• Track, understand and help resolve action items related to process safety
• Develop, implement, and close recommendations for risk assessments and audits
• Interpret and review application of codes, standards, and common industry practices
• Assist with process safety training for new and experienced employees
• Provide guidance on management of change (MOC), pre-startup safety review (PSSR), and risk assessments
• Facilitate risk assessments for MOCs and projects
• Provide directions for PSM Director and MOC Coordinators for MOC and PSSR Trainings
• Update and maintain facility classifications for Permian Assets
• Manage and maintain Permian risk register, facilitate monthly reviews

Basic/Required:

• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
• Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering, or foreign equivalent
• 7+ years of field process safety experience in the oil and gas industry with direct field operations support
• 1+ years of experience in facilitation of PHA’s, Risk Assessments, and Process Safety Audits
• Willing and able (with or without reasonable accommodation) to travel 25% of the time on a yearly basis to field locations, primarily day trips in company pool vehicle

• Demonstrated ability to apply fundamental engineering principles towards the solution of problems
• Demonstration of technical competency in the completion of assignments of increasing responsibility, complexity, and scope
• Ability and strong desire to mentor engineering colleagues and lead small teams
• Unwavering safety awareness and commitment
• Self-motivated, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work within a multi-discipline integrated team
• Exceptional communication skills to confidently present and share ideas at all levels of the organization
