Job Summary
The Sign Language Interpreter II is responsible for providing accommodations to students who are deaf or hard of hearing in campus courses/events.
Duties & Responsibilities
* Provides accommodations to students who are Deaf/hard of hearing (sign language interpretation/transliteration; C-Print captioning) in college, vocational, or community education courses and in other college contexts such as: Student Life or campus events; advisement; and meetings with faculty
* Provides academic advisement to students who are Deaf/hard of hearing
* Provides faculty consultation and training on accommodating students who are Deaf/hard of hearing
* Serves to provide a range of support for students who are Deaf and hard-of-hearing that relates directly to retention and program completion
* Works with the ACCESS Department to assist with scheduling, provide back-up and substitute interpreter/captionist coverage as needed
* Tutors students who are Deaf/hard of hearing
* Monitors the progress and maintains records of assigned students
* Performs other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements
* Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited institution and five (5) years of experience in the field, of which one (1) year is exclusively interpreting for deaf adults; or an Associate's Degree and nine (9) years of experience , of which one (1) year is exclusively interpreting for deaf adults
* Screening levels in the Florida Quality Assurance Level II (QA II); Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) 3.5 or above; or Educational Interpreter Evaluation (EIE) II or above
* All degrees must be from a regionally accredited institution
* Trained in C-Print or be trained within 6 months of hire
* Demonstrated ability to interpret between American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English for both sign-to-voice and voice-to-sign tasks
* Knowledge and understanding of College organization, goals and objectives, and policies and procedures
* Ability to work a flexible which may include evening and weekend assignments
* Ability to work effectively in a dynamic team and to multi task in a fast-paced, multi-ethnic, multi-cultural environment with students, faculty and staff
Additional Requirements
The final candidate is to successfully complete a background screening and reference check process.
